My favorite Football-Trikot: Thomas Hitzlsperger Trikot kaufen
from: Tanishs Blog
On Wednesday, the US National Soccer Team plays the Netherlands in its final tune-up match before this summer's World Cup tournament.
Both teams will be wearing jerseys made of plastic bottles rescued from landfills in Japan and Korea.
Nike and their suppliers did the rescuing, designing, and manufacturing, and the USA and the Netherlands are only two of the ten teams for which they have provided 100% recycled jerseys. Brazil, Portugal, England*, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Serbia, and Slovenia are the other eight. And that means that every Nike jersey in the 2010 world cup will have been made from 100% recycled materials.
For more information, read this post from the World Cup Blog and this post on Treehugger.
And, in case you want to see the jerseys in action, the USA vs. Netherlands match kicks off at 2:45 PM EST on Wednesday, March 3. It'll be televised live on ESPN2.
(Thanks to Earth911.com.)
*You'll notice that Team England isn't pictured in the photograph above. They are present in the photograph accompanying this article, but they are not mentioned in some other articles about the recycled jerseys, and that seems strange to me. Maybe they aren't wearing the jerseys? Maybe they're not working with Nike anymore? If anyone knows, please share in the comments. Thanks!

Ladies and gentlemen it’s here! The countdown is on and we are about to cross the psychological number of 100 days left to go. FIFA Soccer World Cup has become the most awaited sports event in recent history not just because of its magnitude but because it comes to the world’s most colourful continent – Africa!
While the Western media still doubts South Africa’s capability to hold the tournament and always throwing jibes at the continent, the South African authorities are ready to make a buzz of this as 2nd March counts exactly 100 days to the start of this magnanimous event.
What should South Africa do to convince the world that it is ready?:
I have had to ask myself, what else will South Africa do to convince the world that it is not only ready, but capable of hosting and hosting well, the World Cup?
He continues:
The countdown, therefore, has nothing to do with the readiness of the teams, rather it tends to sensitise us to the greatest single sport spectacle on earth. And in this wise, the South Africans can be assured of my vote. The South Africans have so woven life round the World Cup that long after the competition had gone, (just one month) the legacy that will be left behind will be awesome.
The BlaBla Blog puts it into perspective (albeit more practical) by focusing on the ‘fly the flag for 2010 in South Africa event which is a celebration of this important milestone,
2 March is therefore earmarked as a day on which South Africans, here and abroad, are called upon to demonstrate their excitement for the tournament and to display their passion for the country and the beautiful game
In an interesting survey from the South African Road Safety blog, the figures show that 85 % of the South Africans believe the country’s ready to host the tournament:
a record high (85%) of South Africans supporting the preparation ahead of the World Cup has surfaced in African Response’s latest 2010 Barometer – measuring perceptions of readiness ahead of the World Cup in around the major metropolitans in South Africa
However, South Africans are cognisant of the fact that there is still work to be done ahead of the World Cup and 61% agree that we need to focus on policing and security if our visitors are to leave our shores having had a good experience in our country
The SouthAfrica WorldCupBlog was more satirical in its post titled – Here come the fat cats of FIFA…:
FIFA President Sepp Blatter joined many other dignitaries for a 100-day countdown bash in Durban. Local Organizing Committee Chief Executive Danny Jordaan will be present along with Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe. Other participating celebrities include Jay Jay Okocha, Roger Milla, Mark Fish, and Hossam Hassan.
It also highlights the issues still grappling the organisers especially on the issue of the infrastructure in particular the stadium(s):
The latest concerns surround the quality of playing surfaces that are available at both the host stadiums and at some of the training bases chosen by the participating teams.”… The fields were boggy and saturated so the English FA contracted Richard Hayden, from the Sports Turf Research Institute to work on improving their condition. He did such a good job that FIFA signed him up to work on all the problematic pitches around the training camps.
According to Soccerway.com, South Africa is still wooing fans with 100 days remaining:
President Jacob Zuma in his state of the nation address urged locals to buy more tickets and to support the games to honour former president Nelson Mandela, who lobbied to bring the World Cup here. Mandela was central in assisting the country to win the rights to host this great event. We therefore have to make the World Cup a huge success in his honour,” said Zuma. “The infrastructure, security and logistics arrangements are in place to ensure a successful tournament.
“We will deliver a great World Cup,” declares The Times Online blog:
The rising excitement across the nation is palpable and South Africa is about to show the world what Africa is capable of doing. We are a nation with major social challenges, but we will deliver a great World Cup
Finally BushRadio’s blog discusses the events arranged to mark the occasion:
The deputy president will then join a major public celebration at the Durban city hall where a range of festivities will provide a foretaste of the colour and energy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament,”
And also,
Marking the day also Bafana Bafana will play host to neighbours Namibia on Wednesday evening, kick-off at 20h30. The hosts go into the International Friendly in good form after 6-2 and 3-0 wins over Swaziland and Zimbabwe respectively.

South Africa is trying to “green” the Soccer World Cup, but local efforts are struggling to balance out the enormous carbon emissions caused by holding the tournament at the tip of the continent.
The new stadiums built for Africa’s first World Cup incorporate top-notch environmental standards, such as natural ventilation, rain water capture, energy efficiency.
Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban have also planted thousands of trees to capture the carbon dioxide blamed for global warming.
Durban is the most ambitious of the nine host cities, planning to compensate for local carbon emissions by producing electricity from hydraulic turbines or biogas emitted by landfills.
Under the system of carbon credits, these projects will take two and a half years to offset the emissions caused by hosting the tournament in Durban, said Nicci Diederichs, head of the city’s green programmes.
Despite these efforts, the environmental cost of the World Cup will be heavy. The carbon footprint is estimated at the equivalent of 2,75-million tonnes of carbon dioxide, nine times higher than the World Cup in Germany in 2006 and more than twice as high as the Beijing Olympics.
Long trek
Simple geography is the main reason: foreign visitors will travel a total of 7,1-million kilometres to cheer their teams at the southern tip of Africa, their planes emitting tonnes of carbon.
Even without the international travel, South Africa will emit 900 000 tonnes domestically, partly because fans will have to fly between the far-flung host cities, and also because the country relies on coal for most of its electricity.
For efforts to offset the emissions, government has largely left the job to local players.
”The other host cities, and even at national level, they are not getting to grips with carbon issues and climate impact issues. It is so disappointing to see that no one else has really been able to tackle it,” Diederichs said.
The government in November called for proposals for projects that would generate carbon credits.
“At this point of time, they short-listed four projects. None of them are actually feasible at this stage,” Diederichs said.
Something tangible?
Greenpeace climate campaigner Nkopane Maphiri said despite the publicity campaigns about the greening of 2010, not much has actually come to fruition.
“South Africa and the local organising committee have done a massive campaign about the greening of 2010, but we have yet to see something tangible,” he said.
“With 2010 already only 100 days away and not many things happening, we are worried.”
The environment ministry said that it was “in a process of developing a system that will contribute toward the reduction and/or offset of green house gases”, but couldn’t identify a programme already under way.
Anton Cartwright, coordinator of Promoting Access to Carbon Equity (PACE), which encourages voluntary efforts against emissions, said government should have begun looking at environmental efforts far earlier.
“It was a very naive tender,” he said of the government call for proposals.
“You can’t do this and expect people to come with a solution within four months. They should have been looking at this maybe two years ago.”
But he said that hosting the World Cup has prompted some soul-searching about environmental policies that has created a new awareness in South Africa.
“My sense, in the last year, we have seen a lot of changes and the World Cup is part of that,” he said. “When you get international people just asking the question ‘What is the footprint of the World Cup?’, it brings a new awareness.”

A Tale of Carmen
Last week I received an e-mail from another old student, Carmine Narine:
Good Morning Mr. Morris, You may not remember me but I saw your blog online and decided to reach out as I have thought about you many times during the last 20 years. I attended PS 106. You were my 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teacher. My name is Umawattie Narine but I went by Carmen. I remember our trips to bird watch at Jamaica bay and the stencils and sketches of birds we did. But most of all I remember the stamp collection we started. I still have it! I wanted to let you know that back then I wasn’t very confident but you made me feel important and smart. You were the best teacher I have ever had. We once listened to Les Miserable in class and when I saw the actual play- I cried and I felt ahead of my time. I know that sounds strange but I felt so good that I knew everything about it because I had a teacher who not only taught us Math and English— you taught us about life and art. You always had confidence in me and it gave me confidence to strive to be better in all things. I hope this email reaches you and that you are well. Thank you for everything you did for all the kids whose lives you touched. Carmen
After I wrote Carmen, she wrote back to me:
Good Morning Mr. World Famous Bird Photographer! I work in Ad Operations for Conde Naste. I manage the ads on our websites and make sure the clients’ campaigns serve and perform well. It is fun and I love it worked at The Weather Channel and the NBA doing the same thing. I am so sorry to hear that Mrs. Belsky died, and yes, I do remember her. Her class came a few times on our class trips.
I don’t have a picture from our class but I have attached one that should help. I ended up graduating valedictorian from the 6th grade. I was in Mrs. Lowe’s class. I have read your Blog- that’s actually how I found you- I was so excited!! I am so glad you are doing well and I will continue to follow your Blog. A friend of mine is also a photographer and I tried convincing him to take up Bird Watching. Carmen
I wrote Carmen back telling her how proud I am of her. It is of course quite rewarding to hear from my old students.
Handholding the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS
Recently I have begun handholding the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS /EOS-1D MIV combo to good advantage. I have been using the principles taught to me by my friend, Posse member Jim Neiger. The advantages of handholding are that you are more quickly and easily able to get on the action than if you were using a tripod. Especially when it would be necessary to move the tripod before starting to photograph a new situation. And it is easier to frame fast moving birds (especially those that fly somewhat erratic patterns) and to frame and follow frantic action when handholding than it is when working atop a tripod.
Do know that it is only necessary to hold the lens up for short periods of time, say 10-20 seconds at most. Before raising the lens it is best to support it in some manner to prevent fatigue. Jim’s mantra is “practice, practice, practice” so that when you raise the lens you are able to get right on the subject. I have been after Jim for a year or two to put together “The Guide to Handheld Photography With Big Telephoto Lenses.”
In the opening White Pelican image in this post it would have been impossible to get as low as I wanted low with the tripod-mounted 800 on the crowded pier that the IPT group was working from. So I simply sat on the edge of the dock, supported the lens on my bent knee when waiting for the situation to improve, and then raised the lens when the big, beautiful birds swam into the perfect position. In the relatively low light situation I supported the back of my left wrist and hand again on my bent left knee. (I did not realize that I had been working at such a slow shutter speed; my technique must have been perfect!) Do compare the light and the exposure data with that of the similar White Pelican image at the top of the February 19 post below; that one was created in full sun.
Readers of ProLost, pat yourself on the back.
In the 18 months since Canon announced the Canon 5D Mark II, you’ve written, you’ve called, you’ve left comments here and on Vincent Laforet’s blog. You politely but firmly harrassed Canon personel at trade shows. Perhaps most significantly, you put your money where your mouth is and bought 7Ds, showing Canon that 24p is even better than Bokake.
It delights me to no end to read these words in a Canon press release:
Developed following feedback from photographers and cinematographers, Firmware 2.0.3 further enhances the EOS 5D Mark II’s excellent video performance. The addition of new frame rates expands the camera’s video potential, providing filmmakers with the ability to shoot 1080p Full HD footage at 24fps (actual 23.976fps)—the optimum frame rate for cinematic video. 25fps support at both 1920×1080 and 640×480 resolutions will allow users to film at the frame rate required for the PAL broadcast standard, while the new firmware will also change the 30fps option to the NTSC video standard of 29.97fps.
I underlined a couple bits in there. Do they sound familiar? The wording is almost directly lifted from ProLost posts and my other communications with Canon.
Does it seem like I’m patting myself on the back? Well I am. But you should too. I know that, at best, I played maybe a tiny role in this. But this is a very cool thing that has happened here—we spoke, and Canon listened.
Read the full press release at dpreview.com.
Take a trip down memory lane and view all ProLost posts tagged Canon 5D Mark II.
And heck, buy a 5D Mark II from Amazon and support this site. I love mine, and I’m about to love it even more.
Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera (Camera Body) Description The Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera features an APS-C sized 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor for superb quality images and the latest DIGIC 4 Image Processor to provide superior color reproduction, and improved ISO capabilities for uncompromised shooting even in the dimmest situations. It also features a 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor, supercharged Live View Function with Face Detection Live mode, plus a number of automatic Image Correction settings and HDMI output. The 15.1-megapixel image sensor delivers ultra-detailed images and the redesigned photo diodes and microlenses of the sensor extend its light gathering capabilities to ensure improved high ISO performance and low noise. Furthermore, the camera’s ISO sensitivity is an astounding 3200 with expanded sensitivity to an ultra-sensitive 12800. The Integrated Cleaning System includes a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit with a fluorine coating to improve the camera’s image quality by helping to reduce, repel and remove unwanted dust from the sensor. Plus, stubborn particles can be removed automatically in post-production with Dust Delete Data and Canon’s included Digital Photo Professional software. The 50D is incredibly fast thanks to the DIGIC 4 processor – it allows for up to 6.3 fps continuous shooting, in bursts of up to 90 JPEG images (with a UDMA CF card). Furthermore, Canon’s wide area AF system uses 9 individual cross type sensors, so stunning action sequences can be captured – even in low-light conditions – making the EOS 50D particularly suited to sports and wildlife shooting. The DIGIC 4 processor also delivers 14-bit image processing, for smooth gradation and natural-looking colors – as well as ensuring ultra-fast startup times and near-instant image review after shooting. The 3.0″ Clear View VGA LCD (920,000 pixels) provides an extra-large and wide angle-of-view image review, with plenty of clarity for accurate focus checks in playback. By switching to Live View mode – which displays a real-time image on the LCD – photographers can enjoy simplified shooting from awkward angles, or connect to a PC for remote shooting. In addition, the Live Mode offers three ways to auto focus: Quick AF, Live AF, and Face Detection Live AF, which optimizes focus based on faces detected in the frame – for fast, spontaneous portraiture. The camera even offers HDMI output for viewing images on an HDTV – directly from the camera. Even with all of these high powered features, the EOS 50D features Canon’s renowned intuitive EOS menu system, along with a Quick Control screen, for instant access to the most commonly-changed settings. There is also a Creative Auto mode that offers automatic focus and exposure – while still allowing the user to add creative ‘tweaks’ to settings such as background sharpness. Altogether the Canon EOS 50D is an excellent product for advanced amateur photographers and entry-level professionals. • 15.1 Megapixel CMOS Sensor The EOS 50D features a 15.1-megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor which is capable of recording up to 4752 x 3168 pixels with full 14-bit A/D conversion for extremely fine tonal gradation. It can capture images with exceptional clarity and has the same 3:2 ratio as a film camera, but with a focal length conversion factor of 1.6x. The use of improved microlenses and the latest manufacturing techniques mean each pixel is more sensitive to light, making the camera capable of recording at sensitivities previously too noisy for shooting in low light or subjects in motion. • Incredibly High ISO Sensitivity With a wide ISO range of 100-3200 and a maximum ISO rating of 12800 (H1: 6400, H2: 12800) combined with a 4-level High ISO speed noise reduction function, the Canon EOS 50D can capture beautiful, well balanced images that would usually be impossible without the use of a strobe or flash. • DIGIC 4 Image Processor The DIGIC 4 Image Processor of the EOS 50D offers finer details and even more natural color reproduction, compared with previous incarnations, and utilizes advanced signal processing technologies to provide even faster operations, along with faster write times when using UDMA type CF cards. The DIGIC 4 Processor also mediates Canon’s Face Detection Live mode, allowing the camera to detect and focus up to 35 face(s) and capture the best possible group or portrait shots. An improved Auto Lighting Optimizer is also available to correct image brightness and contrast automatically, and the innovative Peripheral Illumination Correction is available for up to 40 EF lenses. • Outstanding Performance The EOS 50D is one of the fastest digital SLRs available with the ability to shoot up to 6.3 fps, making it ideal for everything from wildlife to sports. It can capture up to 90 JPEGs when using UDMA CF cards, as well as 60 consecutive JPEGS or 16 RAW using standard CF cards. The camera also has a nearly instant start-up time of 0.15 seconds, speedy autofocus with predictive AF focus and minimal shutter lag of only 59 milliseconds, making the EOS 50D one of the fastest cameras available, so you’ll never, ever miss a shot. • Durable and Reliable The EOS 50D exterior is constructed with lightweight and ultra-rigid magnesium-alloy giving the camera a solid, substantial feel that complements its compact dimensions. Designed to withstand the rigors of everyday use, the camera is shock, dust and weather resistant. • Fast AF System The high-precision 9-point wide area AF system and each of the nine AF points uses a cross-type coverage system, enabling the camera to focus faster, more accurately, and in ever more complex lighting situations than previous models. For added accuracy and precision, the 50D incorporates a diagonally mounted, high-precision cross-type sensor at the center AF point that is sensitive to both vertical and horizontal lines when fast lenses (f/2.8 or faster) are used. Furthermore, the camera has a number of focus modes, including One-Shot AF, AI Focus AF and AI Servo AF, and all focus points can be chosen automatically, or accessed using the intuitive, thumb operated Multi-Controller. • Versatile Exposure Metering System The 35-zone metering sensor of the EOS 50D provides for multiple patterns including Evaluative metering, which is linked to all AF points, Center-weighted average metering, Partial metering and Spot metering (covering 3.8 percent of the viewfinder at center). The camera also has 12 exposure control modes (11 AE modes plus manual), and three Custom exposure modes. • Large 3.0-inch VGA LCD Monitor The large three-inch Clear View LCD screen of the EOS 50D has an incredible resolution of 920,000 pixels, is brighter than previous models with a broad color gamut and a wide viewing angle of 160 degrees in order to facilitate easy viewing – even under less than ideal viewing conditions such as bright sunlight. The surface of the display screen is prepared with multiple coatings for improved viewing and smudge-resistant protection, while the large overall size of the screen makes it easy for users to read menus and icons and thereby gain easier access to camera settings like ISO, Metering modes AF Point selection and flash options. • Live View Function The advanced Live View Function is a powerful feature that enables viewing your subjects directly on the 3-inch LCD monitor while shooting, and users can magnify any part of the scene 5x or 10x for precise manual focus. Users can even choose from 2 overlay grid options, perfect for keeping straight lines in your subject straight in your pictures. In the studio, the camera can be controlled remotely with Live View Function when the camera is connected to a computer through a USB cable, or wirelessly if the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3A is used. • Comfortable Viewfinder The EOS 50D incorporates an upgraded viewfinder that has an optical magnification of 0.95x and an eye point of 22mm. Users can even change the focus screen and opt for a grid-type focus screen that makes it easier to verify horizontal or vertical alignment, as well as a Super-Precision Matte focusing screen that makes manual focusing easier when using a lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or faster. • EOS Integrated Cleaning System The Camera combats sensor dust in three important ways; Dust is Reduced through improved camera mechanism design, Anti Static technologies (including a special fluorine coating) then Repel dust from the surface of the image sensor’s low-pass filter, then there is the Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit to Remove any dust from the sensor’s filter by using hi-frequency vibrations to shake it off. And if there happens to be any stubborn dust particles that still remain on the image sensor filter after all of this, the Dust Delete Data system can map the position of visible dust on the sensor, which is then deleted automatically with the included Digital Photo Professional software. • “Picture Style” Settings With Picture Style technology, photographers can utilize one of six preset Picture Style settings (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome), or adjust color, saturation, sharpness and contrast settings to create one of three additional user programmable settings to suit their particular photographic style. • Creative Auto Mode The Creative Auto mode and the quick control screen help novice users narrow the gap between fully automatic and manual control. While the camera will remain by default in fully automatic mode, frequently changed settings like flash, exposure compensation, image quality and more are all accessible through one easy screen interface designed for intuitive, quick action. • High-Definition Video Output The EOS 50D includes an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output that enables the display of your photographs on any HDTV with HDMI ports. Resolution is set automatically to match the TV to which you’ve connected, and images are displayed in a full-frame 3:2 ratio with blacked out bars to the left and right of the image. The High Definition output can be utilized by professional photographers to get immediate client approval or can be used by anyone to present slide shows or photo presentations of your last shoot. • Sophisticated Flash Photography The EOS 50D features the acclaimed E-TTL II flash metering system, and is compatible with any of the Canon EX Speedlite series flash units. The E-TTL II system provides reliable flash output whether shooting fill-in flash pictures in sunlight, or using flash in total darkness. This flash system utilizes the same 35-zone metering sensor used for measuring ambient light, giving even finer metering command of the image area. The Canon Speedlite 430EX II is the ideal step-up accessory with excellent flash power, provides bounce flash, with its tilting and swiveling flash head, and it automatically zooms the flash head to cover lenses ranging from 16mm up to 105mm or longer. Plus, the 430EX II provides a powerful AF-assist beam, which allows the camera to autofocus even in total darkness on subjects as far as 32 ft. from the camera. • Compatible with All Canon EF & EF-S Lenses The EOS 50D is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup, ranging from ultra-wide angle to super telephoto lenses, and including Canon’s EF-S series lenses, manufactured specifically for Canon’s APS-C sized digital sensor. Canon lenses employ advanced optical expertise and micron-precision engineering to deliver unprecedented performance in all facets of the photographic process. Aspherical optics and fluorite elements, for example, are featured in the universally acclaimed L Series lenses, and Canon’s Image Stabilizer technology in select lenses minimizes the effect of camera shake. • Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction Canon’s exclusive Lens Peripheral Illumination setting automatically evens out the brightness across the image by taking into account any light falloff in the corners of the frame and correcting it, for a perfectly exposed image. Correction data are detected automatically on a number of Canon EF lenses and can be entered manually through the included Canon EOS Utility software. • Additional System Accessories In addition to Canon’s EF lenses and Speedlite flashes, many other accessories are designed by Canon to work perfectly with the EOS 50D. The Battery Grip BG-E2N adds a vertical shutter release, and is compatible with up to two of Canon’s BP-511A Lithium-ion battery packs for increased shooting capacity, or alternatively a set of six AA-size batteries, for greater convenience when traveling. The EOS 50D is also compatible with the Canon WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter, which allows photographers to transmit images from their cameras directly to a computer over a Wireless network (802.11 b/g), connect to compatible third-party GPS device, or plug a compatible USB 2.0 hard drive into the transmitter’s USB port, and actually shoot directly to a portable hard drive. • Powerful Bundled Software Among the most valuable features of the Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR is its compatibility with Canon’s Picture Style Editor (PSE) software. With PSE, shooters can actually design the look of their photographs by inputting their own preferred style, color and tone curves. Picture Style files created with Picture Style Editor can be loaded into the EOS cameras that support Picture Style and may also be used when processing RAW images. The camera also ships with the latest versions of Canon’s powerful software applications, including Digital Photo Professional 3.5 and EOS Utility 2.5, which support the camera’s Remote Live View and Dust Delete Data functions, as well as incorporating a broad range of additional improvements designed to improve image quality and speed up workflow. Also included are ZoomBrowser EX 6.2 (Windows) and ImageBrowser 6.2 (Macintosh) for easy browsing, viewing, printing and archiving with compatible computer operating systems, including Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows XP, as well as Mac OS X. Mr. And Mrs. Frugal Choose a Photographer

I taken a lot of Pix in the last couple of days – please tell me if you like them:
Photo Website Tell me if you like them – i love to discuss the photos with you!
Most of my photo shoots come around through word of mouth. Someone mentions their own photos to a friend, and usually mentions the rates for a shoot. Very often, I get interested people based solely on my rates. Whenever that is the case, it is certain that a photo shoot never happens.
I will get an email where the only thing mentioned is how low my rates are, and that they want to make an appointment. They never mention any photos, and they usually have ideas that are nothing like what I do. I can tell when someone has not bothered to look at some of my photos. These people apparently fall off the earth and no-show the appointment.
Very few people are courteous enough to let me know it is not going to work out. It seems the price is right, but I was not.
That is fine. I would not want to be for everyone. This demonstrates to me that there is much more value in a photographer than how much he costs. It will take some work, but finding the right photographer for you will make the experience much better. And give you photos that you love.
I wanted to write a quick guide of what to consider when hiring a photographer for your personal photos. Now this comes from personal experience, so I am sure other photographers have different ideas and expectations. Since that is the case, the number one rule is – communicate with the photographer.
With the affordability of digital cameras, anybody can become a photographer. Becoming a good photographer is another story however. Take a quick look at Craigslist and you can find many pro and would-be photographers in your area. You most likely have a photographer in your family as well. Not just anyone is going to be the best photographer for you though.
Find a Photographer
Determine how much you are willing to spend. Despite just saying cost is not the most important factor, it will give you a guideline for the type of photographer you should look for. Will you be looking at pro photographers with years in the business, or an amateur just getting started? As you look over portfolios, focus on the photographers that create the kinds of photos you would want to be in. Do you want to be in a studio, or at a location?
Ask questions. You are the customer. I do not understand why people feel nervous about creative types like photographers, but do not be shy. Make sure to ask all the questions that you have. It helps to understand who your photographer is, how he works and what he expects of you. Ask about prints and copyright issues. Understand exactly what you are about to get.
Do not haggle for rate discounts. If you do not want to pay the rate he is asking, then move along. This is not a Turkish bazaar.
Share your ideas. This might depend on the photographer, but I personally enjoy when people are comfortable enough to throw out their own ideas. You know what you like, and you probably know what makes you look good and feel comfortable. It is worth a try.
Day of the shoot
Show up on time. Better yet, show up 15 minutes early. Take a few moments to relax and not feel rushed into snapping photos. Depending on the photographer and the situation, if you show up late you may just go home empty handed. It is not uncommon for a photographer to charge a deposit on the appointment. It is probably because he is tired of people being late or no showing.
If you are going to be late, let the photographer know. If your appointment is at 7 a.m., do not call at 7:15 and say you are going to be another 20 minutes late. That is just rude. Also, do not pull a no show. If you cannot or do not want to shoot anymore, have a little courtesy and make a phone call.
Do not try to sneak in anything you have not already talked about. The price you were quoted reflects the photo shoot you discussed. Do not wait until halfway through the shoot to try to sneak Aunt Mildred in. Be respectful of the photographer and his time.
After the shoot
Give credit to the photographer. If you do not give credit where it is due – at the least you can expect some bad karma, but at the worst expect some copyright infringement litigation. Together you can determine the photo rights, but most likely, your photographer will tell you how it is going to be.
If you love your photos and had a great experience, tell your friends. There are so many options available now. Do not feel like you have to settle on anything. Become an active participant in your photos. You do not have to be a professional model to create great images that fit your personality. You just have to think beyond the white shirt and blue jeans – and find the photographer that fits you.

Police questioned an amateur photographer under anti-terrorist legislation and later arrested him, claiming pictures he was taking in a Lancashire town were “suspicious” and constituted “antisocial behaviour”.
Footage recorded on a video camera by Bob Patefield, a former paramedic, shows how police approached him and a fellow photography enthusiast in Accrington town centre. They were told they were being questioned under the Terrorism Act.
Senior police officers last year promised to scale back the use of anti-terrorist legislation such as Section 44 of the act, which deals with photographers, after a series of high-profile cases in which photographers said they had been harassed by police for taking innocuous images in the street.
Patefield and his friend declined to give their details, as they are entitled to under the act. The police then appeared to change tack, saying the way the men were taking images constituted “antisocial behaviour”. Patefield, who is in his 40s, was stopped three times before finally being arrested.

Basically, all of this stuff, plus two of those giant cameras up there. But on top of all the layers of clothing you have to wear, and you have to stand in place for hours and hours. What a blast! [Pocket Lint]

Yes, Alex Galmeanu does a nice job with the archive. Thankfully there are pictures of Bucharest since we all know that Bucharestians absolutely hate having their picture taken. I did a Bloomberg News assignment here on Thursday about the economy and tried to photograph at Piata Matache inside where a woman was selling carrots to an old man but was stopped immediately as I drew my camera to my eye. Simply amazing stuff! Where did the security guy come from?! How was he so close to me already?! Why can I not photograph a woman selling vegetables?! I mean I had no wiggle room. I had no time to even try to make a picture. I managed to get off three frames while the security man yelled at me and one frame was used by Bloomberg. . . next month’s rent paid and I was almost kept from taking a single frame. Bucharest is a mean city. If corrupt politicians and business men can make millions, I certainly should be allowed to make a half a grand.

Seven Awesome Gadgets to Gift the Artsy Photographer

I have taken some Photos in the last couple of weeks – please tell me what you think:
Read Number 1 Tell me if you like them – i love to discuss the photos with you!
If you like taking photos you may be wondering what type of training do you need to become a photographer. Although everyone can benefit from taking photography courses, how much training you need depends on what type of photographer you wish to become.
If you desire to be a photojournalist or specialize in a science such as medicine, you will need to get a college degree. In addition to gaining the level of knowledge you need for these careers, getting a college education will also help you develop your portfolio and make the contacts necessary to secure work later on. When choosing a college, find one with which specializes in your specific area within the photography major. Going to a university whose photography department focuses on photos as art will not give you the help you need to be a forensic photographer.
An internship or work experience is some of the best training you can get. In some specialties, such as advertising and fashion, it is as hard to get an assistant position as it is to get a job as a photographer. Don't let that discourage you, though. Do whatever it takes to get a foot in the door, even if you must work another job to be able to afford an unpaid internship. Fortunately, other industries aren't as difficult to get into. Make local contacts in your area. Join organizations that relate to your interest. Find people who are doing what you desire to do and ask them for an internship.
No formal education or training is a requirement to be a freelance photographer. One of the best ways to find out how to sell your work to publishers is to pick up a copy of the latest edition of Photographer's Market. Different publications will have different requirements, and this book can be invaluable if you want to become a published photographer. Take the time to develop a portfolio and be sure to only include your best work. If you take the time to specialize, you will become an expert in a field and will be more sought out than photographers who take photos of anything. Try to find a niche with little competition that you enjoy.
Perhaps the easiest way to get started is to sell your work to stock photo companies. You can find a list of them in the Photographer's Market or online. One advantage of this is that you don't have to work directly with customers. So if the thought of calling up prospects and getting rejected more times than you get accepted makes you hesitate at becoming a photographer, selling stock images might be the right way to go. With stock images, you keep the rights to your photos and are paid a percentage of the fee that customers pay to use that photo. You'll need to submit a large number of photos, but quality is still more important than quantity. Not all agencies are open to newcomers and not all photos will pay the same. Keep in mind that if you want to sell photos of people, you will need to get a model's release. Photography classes will help you improve the quality of your photo and take the time to train yourself on the law.
If you decide to go in business for yourself, you will need to train in more than how to take a good picture. Spend the resources necessary to develop your interpersonal communication skills. Take a few business classes so that you can run your business effectively. Selling your photographs directly to customers can be tough, but rewarding. Approach local businesses to see what their photography needs are. See if the tourist bureau needs a new brochure, or if gift shops need postcards of local attractions. In addition, you can set up a website to help attract clients. Find out the photograph needs of web designers and fulfill them.
If you have the skill and the dedication, you can become a photographer, even without any formal training. The first step is to decide what type of photographer you want to be, and then train yourself accordingly.

Mei Lan, a 3-year-old female giant panda from Zoo Atlanta is shown to the media prior to her departure from Atlanta to China Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 aboard a Federal Express cargo plane, called the “FedEx Panda Express”. Mei Lan is Zoo Atlanta's firstborn giant panda and will be accompanied on the trip by Heather Roberts, left, a giant panda keeper at Zoo Atlanta. Before heading to China, the plane will make a stop in Washington, DC, where it will pick up Tai Shan, a 4-year-old male giant panda born at the National Zoo. Experts believe there are only 1,600 giant pandas that remain in the wild.
OK so I was just inspired by a post over at the excellent Somewhere From the North. And no, I’m not just saying excellent because I’m on his blog roll, I really do think it’s excellent. But the fact that the man’s got taste doesn’t hurt either. Anyway I was reading an article in which he linked to an article on the official BWFC site. Now considering that the site is crap, I only go there to buy tickets or confirm transfers, but I may just have discovered a goldmine. They have pictures. Lots of them. And I found the cutest picture of all time. Seriously, I squealed when I saw it (I’m guessing your reaction was slightly different Quentin). So I may or may not (depending on if I can ever brave the BWFC site again) start a little feature called Photo Album with pictures of our wonderful players in action. We’ll see. Anyway here’s this
That’s right ladies and gents, Bolton is too cheap to buy all three of their new players sweatshirts and shirts, so they’ll just have to share one shirt between them. I sense an entertaining game of musical shirts, better start working on those six-packs boys. I know, I sound like a predator.
Clearly only Stu got the Make-A-Cool-Guy-Face memo. Also is it just me or do Weiss and Wilshere look frighteningly similar from this angle?
And we crescendo with The Cutest Picture of All Time. England teammate and mentor (ok maybe not mentor, I just couldn’t resist) Gary Cahill gives Jack a lift. Aaaaawwww.
And just so we don’t all die of cuteness-overload I’m popping in a picture of Coyle to counteract the last one. Too harsh? Sorry Owen, I love you nonetheless.

Top 13 American Idol contestant Adam Lambert is allegedly gay. So? Didn't most of us American Idol viewers realize that? But when Adam Lambert began stirring up a stink on the internet in the first week of March 2009, with certain photos of him kissing some fellas, some people began going into shock. My opinion on the subject is this: Whatever blows your skirt up, Adam. However, will this internet incident affect Lambert's chances of actually winning American Idol?
The photos of Adam Lambert and another unidentified guy kissing (um, tonguing?) and another colorful smooching photo can be viewed here. Evidently, the photos were taken at the “Burning Man” arts festival in California. This day and time being gay is no big deal, compared to years gone by when men or women felt they had to hide their sexual preference. But some folks living in the bible belt, Georgia in particular, will likely be turned off by this sort of public behavior, let alone splattered all over the internet.
Don't get me wrong, Adam Lambert is a powerful singer and he is destined for fame, but I do have a bone to pick with Lambert due to his last performance on American Idol. I, personally, felt that Lambert's slight-of-hand genital stroking during his latest performance of “I Can't Get No Satisfaction” was totally inappropriate. Hey! We got kids, here, Adam! Isn't this supposed to be a family show?
This writer asked American Idol watchers in different age groups in Georgia about their opinion of Adam Lambert's tongue touching internet incidents. “I don't really care what he does, I'm voting for Lil Rounds. But I don't understand why he would want to jeopardize his promise of winning American Idol by leaking photos of his tongue action,” commented resident of Forsyth, Georgia, Patsy Hollifield. Morrow, Georgia, resident Brittany Crews, replied “I don't think it's a big deal, but that sort of thing should be kept private.” Thomaston, Georgia, resident Sandra Sosebee, described her feelings in one word, “Yuck.”
Could it be that the smooching photos of American Idol hopeful Adam Lambert could have been taken without his knowledge? Sure. Could it be that the photos of Adam Lambert were taken with his knowledge? Sure. Either way, American Idol's Adam Lambert has certainly got folks talking and you can't buy that kind of publicity. Only time will tell if American Idol contestant Adam Lambert will be positively or negatively influenced by the internet guy-to-guy face action.

When students in the University council asked attention for the capacity of the Inner City University Library, the Executive board decided to install a project group to develop a set of options to solve the capacity problems in the library. The project group was chaired by the Director of the School of Business and Economics.
The project group advised to expand the number of study places within the library by reducing the amount of special group working rooms, to introduce lounging and coffee facilities and to extend the number of copying and printing facilities.
When the Executive Board agreed positively, the University Library started the implementation.
Variety of study places
The intention was to leave the concept of the University Library intact and even to enhance it. The concept was and is to offer a variety of study places with distinct atmospheres and facilitate different preferences: individual needs (which type of study place and view you like personally) and needs in relation to studying: do you have to study group wise, study individually with or without a computer or to study fully concentrated in a study cabin. By adding more than 160 study places we were worried to create a dull space full of only a lot of uniform study carrels instead of an inspiring learning environment.
Luckily the former architect could be contracted again to reach this purpose, creating a stimulating ambience. In the first period library committees screened their collections and those were subsequently moved to the closed stacks to create free spaces in the library building. After a period of thinking, discussing and designing, the refurbishment started half July. A great deal was done at the beginning of October.

Intent on freeing Iraqi peoples from the dominion of Saddam Hussein, Operation Iraqi Freedom began four years ago. Walking into a commitment situation, a job soldiers took on was retraining of Iraq's security to aid their country in standing on their own in the future. According to a recent report by NPR sources, President Bush did elaborate intent of withdrawing troops after a recent upsurge of concentrated military effort. The source also indicated that Australia's Prime Minister John Howard is supportive of the president and has been grappling with opposition from a rival to have Australian soldiers exit now. The input of this information was a result of President Bush's recent surprise visit to the Anbar Province of Iraq, Australia the layover before it. This information is askew from the recent pullout of British troops ordered by Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain. And it wasn't all that long ago when Australia was suffering from waves of terrorist attacks also.
The most common remark by laypeople on the situation is “how did we get from Afghanistan to Iraq?” Also with the 2006 trial and execution of Saddam Hussein, the situation and vantage point of possible freedom is not the same. Of course the Iraq issue is most personal for someone who has an enlisted loved-one in Iraq or is up for possible deployment. My contact has been with veterans and young people with friends in the military. With whomever I talked to, the thing over who is a Democrat or Republican wasn't mentioned, their focus was strictly on service and striving for freedom from terrorism and inhumanity. The dilemma of the situation, and this conclusion in my case is from talking to ex-servicemen, is many consider it wasteful to throw our arms up in the air and walk out of Iraq as if holding a white flag while the country collapses. It hasn't been an overnight process and it isn't realistic for us to expect it. But we do know with regard to Saddam Hussein, human rights issues have been addressed. Hussein's end was decided by a tribunal of representatives and afflicted peoples indigent to the middle east. One freedom was in holding court to deal with tyranny on their own terms. A key issue is the decision was indigenous.
As far as Great Britain goes, of course they've had their own share of trouble in this matter. Locally, I've been hurt by the nonchalant, take-it-for-granted concept overheard in different conversations or flatly said non-supportive comments regarding Britain's forces. Even not-so-recent remarks as “what are they doing there?” On the other hand, countries who didn't get involved haven't been appreciated either, most blatantly, France. With this kind of thinking, I don't blame Britain for wanting to get out. It also isn't realistic for things to be done singlehandedly by the U.S. It's unfair to our soldiers as well.
From talking to the veterans, my recollection is many have indicated it doesn't make sense to just “drop the ball.” On the other hand just as many laymen want out. Politicians and military personnel with knowledge of Iraq's intricacies believe withdrawal from a country requires as much strategy as going there to begin with. Iraq also has a history of manufacture of weapons of destruction, especially for terrorism warfare and have flaunted it. As close as Afghanistan is, agreeably, it isn't a good idea to allow another collapse in Iraq or chance another supply of fuel for terrorism to build-up.
Now it's a matter of non-terrorist Iraqi civilians having a chance to operate their freedom without subjugation or tyrannical dominion. That's why U.S. soldier's like to say “we're setting up Operation Iraqi Freedom.” Has our ideology and defense been spent or is the U.S. fed up and enough is enough four years later?
