Why Can’t You Get Hired?

Why can’t you get hired? Recently, a person looking for work asked me this question. He then stated, “I have been looking for a job for more than a year. I have a good education, and a great work history. Why are they not hiring me? My response to him might shock you. On ABC news, I stated: “Most interview mistakes are not noticed by the job seeker. Truth is- the hiring authority probably just doesn’t like YOU.”

Throughout my 20 years of helping job seekers of all nationalities and industries throughout the US and abroad, I remain consistent with this statement: If you are constantly being overlooked for job opportunities, the majority of the time, it’s because of two reasons: Either the hiring authority does not know that you even exist (because you only apply for advertised job postings that generates a lot of competition), or for some reason, the person conducting the interview simply doesn’t like you.

Here is a bit of shocking career advice that most job seekers do not think about: In most cases, people hire who they like! It’s your job to get them to see the wonderful person that you really are. It’s your job to make it difficult for them to NOT hire you.

One of the best ways to do this is to drown them with the positives by discussing not only your accomplishments, but give clear examples of how you always helped others, and gave 110% to your team members.

Finally, and most importantly, back up your statements with evidence such as rave reviews, employee of the month awards, special recognitions, maximum salary increases, etc.

The problem I notice with most job seekers as I conduct job interview training sessions, is that many do not believe that they are doing something wrong on their job interviews. The problem could be arrogance, your demands, lack of people skills, talking too much, and a host of other factors that you may be unaware of (such as the interviewer believing that you are dishonest, etc.)

Sometimes, factors out of your control can prevent you from getting hired or noticed by the interviewer. Factors such as: obesity, age discrimination, pregnant & job searching, name discrimination, etc., can create huge obstacles in your job search, and you must know how to overcome these forms of hiring discrimination.

It’s unfortunate that many hiring authorities do not give job seekers equal opportunities for hire; however, you should never feel hopeless because in most cases, there is something you can do (or say) to improve your chances of getting hired.

For example, I strongly believe that job seekers should always ask the hiring authority if he/she has any concerns about their ability to do the job. My advice is that you should always ask how you stand up against your competition.

That’s right! Carefully, get them to tell you honestly what their concerns may be. There isn’t a better way to receive direct feedback (and have an opportunity to respond to that feedback) then when you’re having your job interview.

There are many ways to overcome unfair hiring practices and get hired. It is important to always be humble and receptive to constructive criticism to improve your job interviews and employment search methods.

4 Jobs For Nurses That Are Found Outside The Hospital

A vocation marked by its ever-rising shortage, nursing has started to suffer the blow of the rise of unemployment. Ready to graduate from their programs, countless nursing students are anxious and unsure about locating their first job.
With hiring freezes and an increase of more qualified nurses competing for entry level jobs because they have become victims of a worsening economy, the hunt for jobs has become another obstacle for future nurses. However, this may be because nursing students are unaware of other job opportunities. Most people assume that hospitals or doctors’ offices are the best places to find work. Essentially since this is where most others will be applying, your odds are less than favorable to attain the job you’d want. You’d be astounded at the variety of industries and enterprises that require nurses as part of their team.
Insurance Corporations. Log on to any major insurance company’s webpage and you’ll come across a variety of jobs calling for a nursing degree. Particularly, case management is one of these categories. A case manager considers a member’s clinical needs and approves the necessary services. As an example, if a member’s daughter had an eating disorder and wanted to investigate residential treatment, a case manager would be called by an admissions team from the chosen facility. The case manager is responsible for evaluating that this is the right facility and continues to observe the patient’s improvement while subsequently authorizing more treatment if needed.
Medical writing. If you have a knack for the written word and a nursing degree, you can take your skills to a freelance writing line of work. Magazines are always pursuing features written by educated sources and would be interested in submissions on an assortment of topics. From a nurse’s take on hospital infrastructure to the best ways to care for a newborn infant, informational articles sell briskly when they feature any health-related topic. Articles are paid per word or with a per article fee. Freelance writing can also help to supplement a part-time income.
Pharmaceutical sales. Nurses are required in this industry to enlighten and campaign for new and existing products to fellow medical professionals. Positions at companies promoting medical devices and medications oblige nurses to travel extensively while continuously adding to the breadth of their product knowledge. Opportunities for this type of career can be found via a simple internet search of pharmaceutical companies and searching their job postings.
Government and legal arena. National, state and city government also is looking to hire nurses. Whether to help a government-funded pre-natal care initiative to coordinating with the State Department of Health, careers for nurses are available. Government careers allow nurses to move on and take a more educational approach and enjoy a change of pace.
Hopefully the job search seems a little less dire when bearing in mind all the innovative and overlooked areas jobs are found. More employment opportunities can be discovered in other industries not mentioned within this article such as learning institutions, prisons and medical answering services. Keep an open mind and always think of others. Good luck job hunting!
